Am officially sleep-deprived. This is prior to a week long attachment at the Singapore General Hospital, especially since I did a night shift from yesterday till today morning. But on the whole, if I were to say it was an enriching experience, that would most definitely be an understatement. Was attached to the Accident and Emergency department, which means I got to witness the frontline cases or what you could refer to as the worst possible scenerios. Managed to view a whole range of cases from cardiac arrests and strokes to collapsed lungs and dislocated limbs. Even got to see patients with shattered bones, internal bleeding, parkinson's disease and many others involved in major accidents and several assault cases. There were a few cases where the doctors had to perform CPR, give electric shocks and various drugs to patients but were unable to save them. It is quite remarkable how doctors handle all this without a flinch. They even find time to crack jokes while pulling and swinging dislocated arms back into their sockets. Haha. Quite interesting, I must say. Also got to enter the Operation Theatre to watch patients being stitched up and the like. Oh and one of the doctors even let me prepare drips and give injections and insert an IV tube into a patient's vein! I was quite taken aback when he merely gave me instructions and asked me to try it out myself. On the whole, it was an experience I will never forget. That is about it for now. Cheers! =)
